Free New York (NY) CDL Air Brakes practice test 2026

The section applicants fail most often. Pressure figures differ by state manual.

What’s different in New York

Most Air Brakes questions are the same federal material in every state. 4 questions in the app are written for New York alone, from the New York State Commercial Driver's Manual CDL-10.

  • Low air warning on the written air brakes test: Before pressure drops below 60 psi. The national model manual says 55 psi.New York manual, section 5.1.11
  • Low air warning in the pre-trip inspection (skills test): Before pressure drops below 60 psi.New York's CDL manual and licensing pages
  • Skills test version: The older (2005) skills test.New York's CDL manual and licensing pages
  • New York rule: The wig wag drops a mechanical arm into your view when pressure in the system drops below 60 psi.New York manual, section 5.1.11
  • New York rule: The warning light and buzzer should come on before the air pressure drops below 60 psi in either system.New York manual, section 5.2

Two New York questions, answer shown

The New York manual says vehicles built since which year all have automatic slack adjusters?

  1. 1997
  2. 1991(correct answer)
  3. 1994
  4. 1975

New York gives 1991. You still check them, because an automatic adjuster that is out of adjustment points to a fault rather than to neglect.

Handbook section 5.3.2

Under the New York manual, the low air pressure warning must come on before tank pressure falls below what level?

  1. 80 psi
  2. 60 psi(correct answer)
  3. 55 psi
  4. 45 psi

New York sets the visible warning at 60 psi. Once it shows, stop while you still have enough air to brake normally.

A sample question

One example, answer shown. Practicing the rest happens in the app.

At approximately what pressure does the air compressor governor stop pumping air into the tanks?

  1. 125 psi(correct answer)
  2. 150 psi
  3. 100 psi
  4. 60 psi

The governor 'cut-out' pressure is about 125 psi. When tank pressure falls to roughly 100 psi, the governor cuts back in and the compressor resumes pumping.
