How to get your CDL in Ohio (2026)
Getting a CDL in Ohio follows the federal steps every state uses: a DOT medical card, the knowledge tests for a learner permit, at least 14 days with the permit, entry-level driver training, and the three-part skills test. Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles runs the tests and publishes the manual they are written from.
- Skills test: Ohio gives the modernized skills test.
- Checklist on the pre-trip: Yes. You may use a blank checklist as a memory aid during the vehicle inspection.
- Low air warning in the pre-trip inspection (skills test): before 55 psi.
What the Ohio manual says about the tests
- The vehicle inspection has a 30-minute limit and is given in English only.
- You start in the cab, and the brake test must be passed there before you get out. Failing it ends the test immediately.
- The air brake check has four parts that must be done correctly and in order.
- You may use the checklist with no extra markings, and only one axle is required.
- Basic control skills: 40 minutes at most, four exercises: forward stop, straight-line backing, forward offset tracking and reverse offset backing.
- Fail a part and you can reschedule in two days if a slot is available.
The steps in Ohio
