How to get your CDL in Florida (2026)

Updated October 2026 · Written from the state CDL manuals

Getting a CDL in Florida follows the federal steps every state uses: a DOT medical card, the knowledge tests for a learner permit, at least 14 days with the permit, entry-level driver training, and the three-part skills test. Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) runs the tests and publishes the manual they are written from.
  • Florida’s manual adds rules of its own beyond the national model.

What the Florida manual says about the tests

  • Florida runs both versions: the modernized supplement applies only at test sites using the modernized skills test, so ask which one your site gives.

The steps in Florida

  1. Choose your class (most truck drivers get Class A) and any endorsements.
  2. Be 21 to drive across state lines. Whether 18 to 20 year olds can drive within Florida is in the state manual.
  3. Get a DOT medical card from an examiner on the FMCSA National Registry.
  4. Pass Florida’s knowledge tests and get your commercial learner’s permit.
  5. Hold the permit at least 14 days.
  6. Finish entry-level driver training with a registered provider.
  7. Pass the skills test: vehicle inspection, basic control skills, road test.

Each step in detail, with what to expect: how to get your CDL. Fees, forms and offices are in the Florida CDL manual published by Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV).

What Florida does its own way

  • Skills test version: not confirmed. Check the manual before you book.
  • Checklist during the pre-trip: Not confirmed — check the Florida CDL manual.
  • Low air warning in the pre-trip inspection (skills test): Usually before 55 psi (the AAMVA model). Confirm in the Florida manual.
  • On a multi-lane roadway you must vacate the lane closest to the stationary vehicle; if you cannot move over safely, you must slow down to a speed of 20 mph below the posted speed limit.
  • On a two-lane roadway you must slow down to a speed of 20 mph below the posted speed limit; if the speed limit is 20 mph or less, you must travel at 5 mph.
