Florida (FL) CDL manual 2026
Reading the manual is not the same as passing the test on it. Practice it instead: every chapter below has real test questions you can answer right here, plus what Florida does its own way.
Practice the manual, chapter by chapter
State manuals are built on the same national model, chapter for chapter. One thing to know from each chapter, then real questions from it to answer — tap an option to check yourself.
- 1
Introduction
Everyone
You will lose your CDL for at least 60 days if you have committed two serious traffic violations within a three-year period involving a CMV.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What is the penalty for a second alcohol or felony offense of the kind that costs a year for the first?
There is no second chance on this list. A second offense means the CDL is gone for life.
Manual section 1.3.2
What is the penalty for a third railroad crossing violation within three years?
The sequence runs 60 days, then 120 days, then at least one year for the third violation inside a three-year period.
Manual section 1.3.5
- 2
Driving Safely
Everyone
There are two main ways to know when to shift: engine speed shown on the tachometer and road speed, learning which speeds each gear covers.
This chapter has 290 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What is the minimum tread depth required in every major groove on a front (steering) tire?
Front tires carry the steering load and must have at least 4/32 inch of tread in every major groove. Other tires need at least 2/32 inch.
Manual section 2.2
What must be confirmed before you open the engine compartment in Step 2?
You are about to work at the front of the vehicle. It has to be held in place before you get there.
Manual section 2.1.5
- 3
Transporting Cargo Safely
Everyone
A high center of gravity is most dangerous in curves, or if you have to swerve to avoid a hazard.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Which cargo responsibility remains yours even when someone else loads the vehicle?
Inspecting the cargo, spotting overloads and bad balance, and knowing it is secured and not blocking your view or your emergency equipment all stay with the driver.
Manual section 3
What can happen to brakes that are forced to work too hard by an overload?
Overloading lengthens stopping distance and works the brakes beyond what they were designed for, and brakes worked that hard can fail outright.
Manual section 3.2.2
- 4
Transporting Passengers
P endorsement (bus)
At stops, drivers should announce the location, reason for stopping, next departure time, and the bus number.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. You are driving a bus toward a railroad crossing where a stop is required. Within what distance range before the nearest rail must you stop?
Buses must stop between 15 and 50 feet before the nearest rail at railroad crossings where a stop is required. From there the driver looks and listens in both directions for a train.
Manual section 4.3
On buses designed to allow standing, how is the standee line marked?
A two-inch line on the floor, or some other equally clear means, shows riders how far forward they may stand.
Manual section 4.2.3
- 5
Air Brakes
Any vehicle with air brakes
The air compressor may be air cooled or may be cooled by the engine cooling system.
This chapter has 148 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How is the cab control for a front brake limiting valve normally marked?
The two positions are labeled normal and slippery, reflecting the mistaken belief that cutting front brake pressure helped on poor surfaces.
Manual section 5.1.13
How is a manually operated air tank drain valve worked?
Manual drains are built either as a quarter-turn valve at the bottom of the tank or as a valve operated by a cable the driver can reach.
Manual section 5.1.4
- 6
Combination Vehicles
Class A
Before coupling, check that the fifth wheel is tilted down toward the rear of the tractor, with the jaws open and the safety unlocking handle in the automatic lock position.
This chapter has 118 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Whenever you back with a trailer, how should you try to position the vehicle first?
A straight-line back is the one that needs the fewest corrections. When the path has to curve, it should curve toward the driver's side so you can see it.
Manual section 6.1.7
While backing into a dock you lose track of how much room remains behind the trailer. What should you do?
The GOAL rule, Get Out And Look, means physically checking the area whenever you are unsure of clearance while backing.
Manual section 6.1.6
- 7
Doubles and Triples
T endorsement
Below 40 mph, keep one second of following distance per 10 feet of vehicle length.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. When hooking air lines between the first trailer and the converter dolly, how do you avoid crossing them?
Service and emergency lines are color coded, commonly blue for service and red for emergency, so matching like to like prevents crossed lines.
Manual section 7.2
What must you verify about the light cords when inspecting a set of doubles or triples?
A cord that has worked loose kills the lights on everything behind it, leaving the rear of a very long rig invisible at night.
Manual section 7.3.1
- 8
Tank Vehicles
N endorsement
Drivers of tanks with special purpose equipment must know how that equipment operates before driving.
This chapter has 62 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Compared with most other kinds of cargo, why does a load of liquid in a tank make a truck easier to roll over?
A cargo tank places the load well above the pavement, giving the vehicle a high center of gravity. The higher the weight rides, the less sideways force it takes to tip the vehicle over.
Manual section 8.2
At a rest stop you notice product dripping from underneath your cargo tank. What should you do?
A leaking tank must not be driven; the vehicle stays put until the leak is properly addressed, because moving it spreads the product and the danger.
Manual section 8.1
- 9
Hazardous Materials
H endorsement
Table 2 lists ORM-D with no placard name.
This chapter has 234 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Special cargo heater rules apply when loading which three classes?
Explosives, flammable gas, and flammable liquids are the three the cargo heater rules address, and those rules usually forbid heaters altogether.
Manual section 9.4.1
Hazardous materials rules are built around three broad goals. Which set below matches the intent of those rules?
The regulations exist to keep the product in its container, tell everyone what the hazard is, and make sure the people and equipment moving it are safe.
Manual section 9.1
- 10
School Buses
S endorsement
In strong winds a bus driver should slow down, grip the wheel firmly, and pull off the road to wait out severe conditions.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. When should you adjust the outside mirror system on your school bus?
Mirror adjustment must be done while the bus is parked, before the route begins, so every mirror is checked and set before any student is near the bus.
Manual section 10.1
What should be switched on while loading students in the dark?
The dome light lets students see the steps and the aisle, and lets you see them as they come aboard.
Manual section 10.2.2
- 11
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
Everyone (skills test)
You MUST name, point to and/or touch, and fully explain to the examiner WHAT you are inspecting each safety critical item for; if you do not, you will not get credit for the item.
This chapter has 200 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What color must the reflectors mounted on the rear of a trailer be during your inspection?
Reflectors on the rear of the vehicle must be red; amber reflectors belong on the front and sides toward the front.
Manual section 11.2.7
How many parts make up the air brake check, and what happens if you get one wrong?
The air brake check has four parts, and failing to explain and demonstrate all four correctly is an automatic failure of the Vehicle Inspection test.
Manual section 11.1.2
What’s different in Florida
Most of every state manual is the same federal material. These are the parts that are not.
- On a multi-lane roadway you must vacate the lane closest to the stationary vehicle; if you cannot move over safely, you must slow down to a speed of 20 mph below the posted speed limit.
- On a two-lane roadway you must slow down to a speed of 20 mph below the posted speed limit; if the speed limit is 20 mph or less, you must travel at 5 mph.
