Wisconsin (WI) CDL manual 2026
Reading the manual is not the same as passing the test on it. Practice it instead: every chapter below has real test questions you can answer right here, plus what Wisconsin does its own way.
Practice the manual, chapter by chapter
State manuals are built on the same national model, chapter for chapter. One thing to know from each chapter, then real questions from it to answer — tap an option to check yourself.
- 1
Introduction
Everyone
You will be denied or lose your hazardous materials endorsement if you are considered to pose a security threat as determined by the Transportation Security Administration.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What penalty may a court impose for holding more than one license?
The court may fine you up to $5,000 or put you in jail, keep your home state license, and return the others.
Manual section 1.4
What is the penalty for a second alcohol or felony offense of the kind that costs a year for the first?
There is no second chance on this list. A second offense means the CDL is gone for life.
Manual section 1.3.2
- 2
Driving Safely
Everyone
Looking 12 to 15 seconds ahead equals about one block at city speeds and about a quarter mile at highway speeds.
This chapter has 290 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. Why is a stopped bus a hazard to you?
People crossing around a stopped bus often cannot see you, and you cannot see them until they emerge.
Manual section 2.8.3
Why should you never change gears while your vehicle is moving across railroad tracks?
A gear change that fails on the crossing can leave the vehicle without power on the tracks, so drivers should cross in a gear that will carry them completely across without shifting.
Manual section 2.15
- 3
Transporting Cargo Safely
Everyone
Suspension systems have a manufacturer's weight capacity rating.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Which of these is named as proper tie-down equipment?
Tie-downs must be of the proper type and strength, and they must be attached to the vehicle correctly using hooks, bolts, rails, or rings.
Manual section 3.3.2
Which cargo responsibility remains yours even when someone else loads the vehicle?
Inspecting the cargo, spotting overloads and bad balance, and knowing it is secured and not blocking your view or your emergency equipment all stay with the driver.
Manual section 3
- 4
Transporting Passengers
P endorsement (bus)
The rules require shippers to mark containers of hazardous material with the material's name, identification number, and hazard label.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Which safety-related parts does the manual say riders sometimes damage?
These are the parts riders can reach. Reporting the damage at the end of a shift is what lets mechanics fix it before the bus carries anyone else.
Manual section 4.4
Your coach is low on fuel mid-trip and a truck stop is ahead. What is the general rule about refueling while your passengers remain in their seats?
Fueling a bus with riders aboard should be avoided unless it is truly necessary, because fuel handling creates a fire risk close to the passengers.
Manual section 4.4
- 5
Air Brakes
Any vehicle with air brakes
If ABS fails, the vehicle still has normal brakes; only the antilock function is lost.
This chapter has 147 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How is the cab control for a front brake limiting valve normally marked?
The two positions are labeled normal and slippery, reflecting the mistaken belief that cutting front brake pressure helped on poor surfaces.
Manual section 5.1.13
What are the two halves of a dual air brake system called?
One half is called primary and the other secondary, and each has its own tanks, lines, and gauge reading.
Manual section 5.2
- 6
Combination Vehicles
Class A
Landing gear must be fully raised before driving; crank handle secured; never drive with gear partially raised.
This chapter has 118 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. After the fifth wheel jaws lock during coupling, how do you confirm the connection with a tug test?
With the trailer brakes locked, easing the tractor forward in low gear puts a pull on the coupling; if the units stay together, the jaws are holding the kingpin.
Manual section 6.4.1
Whenever you back with a trailer, how should you try to position the vehicle first?
A straight-line back is the one that needs the fewest corrections. When the path has to curve, it should curve toward the driver's side so you can see it.
Manual section 6.1.7
- 7
Doubles and Triples
T endorsement
Doubles and triples have more tires, lights, and coupling points to inspect than singles.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. Before backing the converter dolly under the second trailer, the trailer's nose height should be:
The trailer should sit just below the fifth wheel so it is raised slightly as the dolly slides under, ensuring a snug coupling.
Manual section 7.2
What must you verify about the light cords when inspecting a set of doubles or triples?
A cord that has worked loose kills the lights on everything behind it, leaving the rear of a very long rig invisible at night.
Manual section 7.3.1
- 8
Tank Vehicles
N endorsement
Tank vehicles need increased following distance because surge extends stopping distance.
This chapter has 62 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Compared with most other kinds of cargo, why does a load of liquid in a tank make a truck easier to roll over?
A cargo tank places the load well above the pavement, giving the vehicle a high center of gravity. The higher the weight rides, the less sideways force it takes to tip the vehicle over.
Manual section 8.2
What is the best overall driving style for keeping liquid surge under control in a loaded tank vehicle?
Every abrupt change in speed or direction sets the liquid in motion. Smooth, gradual inputs on the brakes, throttle, and steering keep the wave small and the vehicle stable.
Manual section 8.3
- 9
Hazardous Materials
H endorsement
The front placard may be on the front of the tractor or the front of the trailer.
This chapter has 234 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How do you make hazardous materials shipping papers stand out from the rest?
Someone entering the cab after a crash has to find them immediately, so they are tabbed or placed on top of the other papers.
Manual section 9.6.10
On a portable tank holding less than 1,000 gallons, how tall must the shipping name letters be?
Below 1,000 gallons the letters may be one inch tall, half the height required on the larger portable tanks.
Manual section 9.5.1
- 10
School Buses
S endorsement
Turn on the right turn signal indicator about 100 to 300 feet, or approximately 3 to 5 seconds, before pulling over.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How far can the blind spot behind a school bus extend, depending on the bus's size?
The rear blind spot runs from roughly 50 to 150 feet and can reach 400 feet on a longer, wider bus. Nothing in that space is visible without the side mirrors.
Manual section 10.1.3
What should be switched on while loading students in the dark?
The dome light lets students see the steps and the aisle, and lets you see them as they come aboard.
Manual section 10.2.2
- 11
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
Everyone (skills test)
With the parking brake engaged, remove your foot from the service brake and inspect that the parking brake will hold the vehicle by gently pulling forward.
This chapter has 200 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What color must the reflectors mounted on the rear of a trailer be during your inspection?
Reflectors on the rear of the vehicle must be red; amber reflectors belong on the front and sides toward the front.
Manual section 11.2.7
What must be true of the light lenses on the front of the vehicle?
A cracked, dirty, missing, or wrong-colored lens keeps the light from doing its job even when the bulb works perfectly.
Manual section 11.5.1
What’s different in Wisconsin
Most of every state manual is the same federal material. These are the parts that are not.
- Skills test: the modernized skills test, since November 4, 2024.
- Checklist on the pre-trip: Yes. You may use a blank checklist as a memory aid during the vehicle inspection.
- Low air warning in the air brakes chapter (written test): before pressure drops below 60 psi.
- A warning signal you can see must come on before the air pressure in the tanks falls below 60 psi, or one half the compressor governor cut-out pressure on older vehicles.
- To determine the class of CMV, use the greater of the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, actual gross weight, registered weight, or Gross Combination Weight Rating when the towed unit has a GVWR, registered weight or actual gross weight of over 10,000 pounds.
