Tennessee (TN) CDL manual 2026
Reading the manual is not the same as passing the test on it. Practice it instead: every chapter below has real test questions you can answer right here, plus what Tennessee does its own way.
Practice the manual, chapter by chapter
State manuals are built on the same national model, chapter for chapter. One thing to know from each chapter, then real questions from it to answer — tap an option to check yourself.

Introduction
Everyone
You will lose your CDL for at least one year for two violations of an out-of-service order in a ten-year period, and at least three years for three or more in a ten-year period.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How long do you lose your CDL for three or more serious traffic violations in three years?
The third serious violation inside a three-year window takes the disqualification from 60 days to at least 120.
Manual section 1.3.3
What is the minimum disqualification for a first violation of an out-of-service order?
Ignoring an out-of-service order costs at least 90 days on the first occasion, which is longer than two serious traffic violations combined.
Manual section 1.3.4
- 2
Driving Safely
Everyone
Approximately 5,500 people are killed each year on U.S. roadways and an estimated 448,000 are injured in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted driving.
This chapter has 290 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What is the final action of the engine compartment step?
An unsecured hood or cab can come open at speed, which is why the step ends by closing and latching whatever was opened.
Manual section 2.1.5
What should you do about an aggressive driver's gestures?
Along with avoiding eye contact, ignoring gestures and refusing to react removes the response the aggressive driver is looking for.
Manual section 2.10.3
- 3
Transporting Cargo Safely
Everyone
Placards are diamond-shaped hazard warning signs placed on vehicles to identify the hazard class of the cargo being transported.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Which cargo responsibility remains yours even when someone else loads the vehicle?
Inspecting the cargo, spotting overloads and bad balance, and knowing it is secured and not blocking your view or your emergency equipment all stay with the driver.
Manual section 3
What happens when there is too little weight on the driving axles?
The drive wheels need weight on them to grip. Without it they spin, and in bad weather the truck may not be able to keep moving at all.
Manual section 3.2.4
- 4
Transporting Passengers
P endorsement (bus)
Most hazardous materials cannot be carried on a bus.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What does the manual say about the seat belt at the driver's position?
The instruction is unqualified: the driver's seat should have a belt and the driver should always wear it.
Manual section 4.1.5
A standee line is painted on the floor of buses that allow standing riders. What does this line mark?
The standee line is a line on the floor near the driver, and no rider may stand forward of it while the bus is in motion. It keeps standing passengers out of the driver's view and working space.
Manual section 4.3
- 5
Air Brakes
Any vehicle with air brakes
A low air pressure warning signal is required on vehicles with air brakes, and a signal you can see must come on before pressure falls below the specified level.
This chapter has 148 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Your air compressor is belt-driven. What should you check about the belt during the pre-trip inspection?
If the compressor is driven by a belt, the driver must confirm the belt is in good condition and correctly tensioned so the compressor keeps charging the tanks.
Manual section 5.3
How do the brake lights come on when you apply the brakes on a vehicle with air brakes?
Air brake vehicles use an electric stop light switch that is operated by air pressure; applying the brakes sends air through the switch, which turns on the brake lights.
Manual section 5.1.12
- 6
Combination Vehicles
Class A
Inspection of the lower fifth wheel covers secure mounting, no missing or cracked parts, and proper lubrication of the plate.
This chapter has 118 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Your trailer is hung up on a railroad crossing and will not move. What is the first thing you do?
Nothing on the vehicle is worth being in it when a train arrives. You get clear of the tracks first, then look for the emergency notification information posted at the crossing.
Manual section 6.1.4
Your combination vehicle is equipped with ABS. How should you apply the brakes in a normal stop?
ABS only takes over when wheels are about to lock, so the driver should brake normally and let the system work in the background.
Manual section 6.3
- 7
Doubles and Triples
T endorsement
Inspection of the pintle area covers hook latch engagement and secured safety chains.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. When hooking air lines between the first trailer and the converter dolly, how do you avoid crossing them?
Service and emergency lines are color coded, commonly blue for service and red for emergency, so matching like to like prevents crossed lines.
Manual section 7.2
Among common commercial combinations, which is generally the most likely to whip and roll its rearmost trailer during a sudden maneuver?
The more trailers and hitch points a combination has, the more each steering input is amplified, and triples have the most of both.
Manual section 7.1
- 8
Tank Vehicles
N endorsement
Tank vehicles have a high center of gravity, which makes them more prone to rollover.
This chapter has 62 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What does the manual say is required of anyone who drives a liquid tanker?
Surge makes a tanker behave unlike any other load, so the manual puts the requirement on knowing that specific vehicle's handling rather than on general experience.
Manual section 8.2.2
Besides leaks, what condition of the tank's body or shell does the inspection cover?
Dents in the shell are checked alongside leaks, because damage to the pressure boundary can be the beginning of a failure even where nothing is weeping yet.
Manual section 8.1.1
- 9
Hazardous Materials
H endorsement
The RQ marking identifies a reportable quantity, meaning any spill of that amount must be reported.
This chapter has 234 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Which classes may not be carried as overhang or tailgate loads?
Explosives, flammable solids, and oxidizers must ride in a closed cargo space unless the packages themselves are fire and water resistant or under a resistant tarp.
Manual section 9.4.1
On a portable tank holding less than 1,000 gallons, how tall must the shipping name letters be?
Below 1,000 gallons the letters may be one inch tall, half the height required on the larger portable tanks.
Manual section 9.5.1
- 10
School Buses
S endorsement
In strong winds a bus driver should slow down, grip the wheel firmly, and pull off the road to wait out severe conditions.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Where are the outside convex mirrors mounted relative to the flat mirrors?
The convex mirrors sit below the flat mirrors on each side, giving a wide-angle view along the sides of the bus.
Manual section 10.1.4
Compared with flat mirrors, what is the main advantage of the convex mirrors mounted on the sides of a school bus?
Convex mirrors provide a wide-angle view of the sides of the bus, letting the driver see more area than flat mirrors can.
Manual section 10.1
- 11
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
Everyone (skills test)
Inspect that the air ride suspension is secure, not damaged, and not leaking, if equipped.
This chapter has 200 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How many parts make up the air brake check, and what happens if you get one wrong?
The air brake check has four parts, and failing to explain and demonstrate all four correctly is an automatic failure of the Vehicle Inspection test.
Manual section 11.1.2
What is the consequence of performing the hydraulic brake check incorrectly on the inspection test?
Like the air brake check, the hydraulic brake check is a make-or-break item. Getting it wrong fails the Vehicle Inspection test outright.
Manual section 11.1.2
What’s different in Tennessee
Most of every state manual is the same federal material. These are the parts that are not.
- The tractor unit by itself, known as a bobtail, is not eligible for testing; it must be connected to a trailer with a GVWR equal to or greater than 10,001 pounds.
- CLP and/or CDL applicants must be at least 21 years of age; beginning July 1, 2022, applicants 18, 19 or 20 may operate a Class A or B CMV intrastate if no endorsements are required.
