South Dakota (SD) CDL manual 2026
Reading the manual is not the same as passing the test on it. Practice it instead: every chapter below has real test questions you can answer right here, plus what South Dakota does its own way.
Practice the manual, chapter by chapter
State manuals are built on the same national model, chapter for chapter. One thing to know from each chapter, then real questions from it to answer — tap an option to check yourself.
- 1
Introduction
Everyone
You will lose your CDL for at least 60 days for your first railroad-highway grade crossing violation.
This chapter has 25 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What penalty may a court impose for holding more than one license?
The court may fine you up to $5,000 or put you in jail, keep your home state license, and return the others.
Manual section 1.4
How long will you lose your CDL for a first alcohol or felony offense committed while operating a placarded hazmat vehicle?
The ordinary first-offense penalty is one year, but committing the offense in a vehicle placarded for hazardous materials raises it to three.
Manual section 1.3.2
- 2
Driving Safely
Everyone
Look for torque rod or arm, u-bolts, spring hangers, or other axle positioning parts that are cracked, damaged, or missing.
This chapter has 290 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. You cannot avoid driving through a stretch of dense fog. Which headlight setting should you use?
Fog reflects light back toward the driver, so low beams provide better visibility than high beams, which bounce off the water droplets and create glare.
Manual section 2.12
You are the first driver to stop at a crash scene on a busy highway. After parking your vehicle safely, what should you do first?
The first duty at a crash scene is preventing a second collision, so the area must be protected with warning devices before anything else is attempted.
Manual section 2.20
- 3
Transporting Cargo Safely
Everyone
Coupling devices are rated for the maximum weight they can pull and/or carry.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Which cargo responsibility remains yours even when someone else loads the vehicle?
Inspecting the cargo, spotting overloads and bad balance, and knowing it is secured and not blocking your view or your emergency equipment all stay with the driver.
Manual section 3
On a flatbed, what additional risk comes with a high center of gravity?
A van's walls contain a shifting load. On an open deck there is nothing to stop it going over the side once it starts moving.
Manual section 3.2.4
- 4
Transporting Passengers
P endorsement (bus)
You do not have to stop, but must slow down and carefully check for other vehicles, at streetcar crossings.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Which sections of the manual does the knowledge test for the passenger endorsement cover?
The passenger endorsement test draws on Section 2, driving safely, together with Section 4, transporting passengers. A bus with air brakes adds a test on Section 5.
Manual section 4
You have finished loading at a curbside stop and are ready to rejoin traffic in your transit bus. What should you do first?
Before leaving a stop, the driver must check the mirrors to make sure the path is clear of vehicles, bicycles, and people walking near the bus.
Manual section 4.3
- 5
Air Brakes
Any vehicle with air brakes
The spring brake check is done by fanning pressure down until the parking brake control valve pops out automatically.
This chapter has 148 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. You climb into an air-braked truck and cannot find an application pressure gauge. What does that mean?
The application gauge is useful but optional equipment, so plenty of air-braked vehicles simply do not have one.
Manual section 5.1.10
What are the two halves of a dual air brake system called?
One half is called primary and the other secondary, and each has its own tanks, lines, and gauge reading.
Manual section 5.2
- 6
Combination Vehicles
Class A
Tractor protection valve controls or "emergency" valves on older vehicles may not operate automatically.
This chapter has 118 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. While backing into a dock you lose track of how much room remains behind the trailer. What should you do?
The GOAL rule, Get Out And Look, means physically checking the area whenever you are unsure of clearance while backing.
Manual section 6.1.6
While listening to the trailer brakes during coupling, what should you hear?
Those two sounds prove the service line is doing its job. Silence means air is not reaching the trailer brakes the way it should.
Manual section 6.4.1
- 7
Doubles and Triples
T endorsement
To test trailer emergency brakes, charge the trailer air brake system and check that the trailer rolls freely before applying them.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Which air lines must continue past the converter dolly to reach the second trailer of a set of doubles?
Every trailer in the combination needs both a service line for normal braking and an emergency line for supply and emergency braking.
Manual section 7.2
Before backing the converter dolly under the second trailer, the trailer's nose height should be:
The trailer should sit just below the fifth wheel so it is raised slightly as the dolly slides under, ensuring a snug coupling.
Manual section 7.2
- 8
Tank Vehicles
N endorsement
In stab braking the driver applies the brakes fully, releases when the wheels lock, and reapplies when the wheels begin rolling again.
This chapter has 62 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Inside cargo tanks, what is the key structural difference between a bulkhead and a baffle?
A bulkhead is a solid divider that splits the tank into separate compartments, while a baffle is a divider with openings so liquid can flow through it.
Manual section 8.2
Compared with most other kinds of cargo, why does a load of liquid in a tank make a truck easier to roll over?
A cargo tank places the load well above the pavement, giving the vehicle a high center of gravity. The higher the weight rides, the less sideways force it takes to tip the vehicle over.
Manual section 8.2
- 9
Hazardous Materials
H endorsement
You may use DANGEROUS placards instead of separate placards only if you have not loaded 2,205 pounds or more of any Table 2 hazard class material at any one place.
This chapter has 234 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How do you make hazardous materials shipping papers stand out from the rest?
Someone entering the cab after a crash has to find them immediately, so they are tabbed or placed on top of the other papers.
Manual section 9.6.10
On a portable tank holding less than 1,000 gallons, how tall must the shipping name letters be?
Below 1,000 gallons the letters may be one inch tall, half the height required on the larger portable tanks.
Manual section 9.5.1
- 10
School Buses
S endorsement
When the bus is not itself in danger, students are usually safer inside it than standing exposed near traffic.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How far can the blind spot behind a school bus extend, depending on the bus's size?
The rear blind spot runs from roughly 50 to 150 feet and can reach 400 feet on a longer, wider bus. Nothing in that space is visible without the side mirrors.
Manual section 10.1.3
About how far before a railroad crossing should a school bus driver activate the hazard lights?
Hazard lights go on roughly 200 feet out, which tells the traffic behind you that this bus is going to stop at the tracks.
Manual section 10.4.3
- 11
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
Everyone (skills test)
Inspect that the strobe, amber, and red light indicators on the dash are operational.
This chapter has 200 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What do rust streaks or shiny metal trails radiating out from a wheel's lug nuts usually indicate?
Rust trails or shiny streaks spreading from lug nuts are a warning sign that the nuts have loosened and the wheel is moving slightly on its studs.
Manual section 11.2.5
What must be true of the lug nuts on every wheel?
Every nut must be there and tight. Rust trails or shiny threads around a nut are the signs that it has been working loose.
Manual section 11.5.2
What’s different in South Dakota
Most of every state manual is the same federal material. These are the parts that are not.
- Skills test: the modernized skills test, since May 1, 2024.
- Checklist on the pre-trip: Yes. You may use a blank checklist as a memory aid during the vehicle inspection.
- South Dakota law requires all motorists from any direction approaching an authorized emergency vehicle making use of red visual signals to come to a complete stop before reaching the stopped emergency vehicle and proceed with caution only after making sure it is safe to do so.
- When travelling on interstates or highways with two or more lanes in the same direction, merge into the lane farthest from the vehicle at least three hundred feet before the vehicle and proceed with caution.
