Minnesota (MN) CDL manual 2026
Reading the manual is not the same as passing the test on it. Practice it instead: every chapter below has real test questions you can answer right here, plus what Minnesota does its own way.
Practice the manual, chapter by chapter
State manuals are built on the same national model, chapter for chapter. One thing to know from each chapter, then real questions from it to answer — tap an option to check yourself.
- 1
Introduction
Everyone
You will be denied or lose your hazardous materials endorsement if you have been adjudicated as lacking mental capacity or have been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What penalty may a court impose for holding more than one license?
The court may fine you up to $5,000 or put you in jail, keep your home state license, and return the others.
Manual section 1.4
How long do you lose your CDL for two serious traffic violations in a three-year period?
Two serious violations within three years cost at least 60 days. A third within the same window raises it to 120.
Manual section 1.3.3
- 2
Driving Safely
Everyone
At 55 mph: perception ~142 ft, reaction ~61 ft, braking ~216 ft, total ~419 ft.
This chapter has 290 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What is the minimum tread depth required in every major groove on a front (steering) tire?
Front tires carry the steering load and must have at least 4/32 inch of tread in every major groove. Other tires need at least 2/32 inch.
Manual section 2.2
When does the manual tell you to be especially alert for drunk and sleepy drivers?
Late night is when both impairments are most common, so the clues to look for matter most in those hours.
Manual section 2.8.3
- 3
Transporting Cargo Safely
Everyone
Overloading can have bad effects on steering, braking, and speed control.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What is the main purpose of the diamond-shaped placards displayed on some trucks and trailers?
Hazmat placards communicate the hazard class of the cargo so that emergency responders and other road users know the risk the vehicle carries.
Manual section 3.5
What happens when there is too little weight on the driving axles?
The drive wheels need weight on them to grip. Without it they spin, and in bad weather the truck may not be able to keep moving at all.
Manual section 3.2.4
- 4
Transporting Passengers
P endorsement (bus)
Carry-on baggage must be secured so it does not block access to any emergency exit.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. On buses designed to allow standing, how is the standee line marked?
A two-inch line on the floor, or some other equally clear means, shows riders how far forward they may stand.
Manual section 4.2.3
What does the manual say about the seat belt at the driver's position?
The instruction is unqualified: the driver's seat should have a belt and the driver should always wear it.
Manual section 4.1.5
- 5
Air Brakes
Any vehicle with air brakes
Tanks with automatic drains still include manual drain valves that should be operated to verify moisture removal.
This chapter has 148 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How is a manually operated air tank drain valve worked?
Manual drains are built either as a quarter-turn valve at the bottom of the tank or as a valve operated by a cable the driver can reach.
Manual section 5.1.4
How may the parking brakes be operated on an older air-braked vehicle?
Newer vehicles use the yellow diamond-shaped push-pull knob, but on older equipment the same job may be done by a lever.
Manual section 5.1.15
- 6
Combination Vehicles
Class A
Drivers of loaded combinations should go slower than posted curve or ramp advisory speeds, which are set for smaller vehicles.
This chapter has 118 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. When you can choose the direction, toward which side should you back a tractor-trailer?
Backing toward the driver's side lets you watch the trailer through the side window instead of depending entirely on mirrors.
Manual section 6.1.6
The trailer wheels lock and the trailer begins to swing around. What is this kind of jackknife called?
Locked trailer wheels swinging the trailer around is the trailer jackknife. A tractor jackknife is the different case where the tractor's own drive wheels lose grip.
Manual section 6.1.5
- 7
Doubles and Triples
T endorsement
The most heavily loaded trailer should be nearest the tractor for combination stability.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. When hooking air lines between the first trailer and the converter dolly, how do you avoid crossing them?
Service and emergency lines are color coded, commonly blue for service and red for emergency, so matching like to like prevents crossed lines.
Manual section 7.2
A converter dolly has no spring brakes. How do you release its brakes so it can be moved into position?
On a dolly without spring brakes, the brakes are held on by air stored in its tank. Opening the tank petcock bleeds that air off and frees the wheels.
Manual section 7.2.1
- 8
Tank Vehicles
N endorsement
Grounding or bonding cables prevent static electricity discharges that could ignite flammable vapors during loading and unloading.
This chapter has 62 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What does the manual say is required of anyone who drives a liquid tanker?
Surge makes a tanker behave unlike any other load, so the manual puts the requirement on knowing that specific vehicle's handling rather than on general experience.
Manual section 8.2.2
During a pre-trip inspection of a cargo tank, what is the most important thing to check the tank body, piping, and valves for?
The single most important tank inspection item is checking for leaks. It is illegal and dangerous to transport cargo in a leaking tank, and the driver can be cited and shut down for doing so.
Manual section 8.1
- 9
Hazardous Materials
H endorsement
Portable tanks must display the shipping name of the contents on two opposing sides.
This chapter has 234 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Which classes may not be carried as overhang or tailgate loads?
Explosives, flammable solids, and oxidizers must ride in a closed cargo space unless the packages themselves are fire and water resistant or under a resistant tarp.
Manual section 9.4.1
What makes a container a cargo tank rather than a portable tank?
Cargo tanks are bulk packaging built onto the vehicle and stay there through loading and unloading. Portable tanks are the ones that come off.
Manual section 9.5
- 10
School Buses
S endorsement
A passive crossing does not have any type of traffic control device; the decision to proceed rests entirely with the driver.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. While a school bus is being driven on its route, what is the rule for the emergency exit doors?
Emergency exit doors exist for evacuations only; while the bus is in operation they must be fully closed and secured.
Manual section 10.3
What does a sign mounted below the cross-buck tell you?
Where the road crosses more than one set of tracks, a sign under the cross-buck gives the count, so you know how much rail you must clear.
Manual section 10.4.2
- 11
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
Everyone (skills test)
Inspect that mirrors are clean and not cracked and mirror brackets are not bent and are mounted securely with no missing parts.
This chapter has 200 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What is the consequence of performing the hydraulic brake check incorrectly on the inspection test?
Like the air brake check, the hydraulic brake check is a make-or-break item. Getting it wrong fails the Vehicle Inspection test outright.
Manual section 11.1.2
How many parts make up the air brake check, and what happens if you get one wrong?
The air brake check has four parts, and failing to explain and demonstrate all four correctly is an automatic failure of the Vehicle Inspection test.
Manual section 11.1.2
What’s different in Minnesota
Most of every state manual is the same federal material. These are the parts that are not.
- Skills test: the modernized skills test.
- Checklist on the pre-trip: Yes. You may use a blank checklist as a memory aid during the vehicle inspection.
- Low air warning in the pre-trip inspection (skills test): before pressure drops below 55 psi.
- Minnesota law defines gross vehicle weight as the greater of the actual weight of the vehicle plus the weight of the load, or the manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating.
- You must have a CDL to operate any size vehicle outwardly equipped and identified as a school bus; minimum age is 18.
