Michigan (MI) CDL manual 2026
Reading the manual is not the same as passing the test on it. Practice it instead: every chapter below has real test questions you can answer right here, plus what Michigan does its own way.
Practice the manual, chapter by chapter
State manuals are built on the same national model, chapter for chapter. One thing to know from each chapter, then real questions from it to answer — tap an option to check yourself.
- 1
Introduction
Everyone
You must notify your employer within 30 days of conviction for any traffic violations, except parking, no matter what type of vehicle you were driving.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What is the penalty for a second alcohol or felony offense of the kind that costs a year for the first?
There is no second chance on this list. A second offense means the CDL is gone for life.
Manual section 1.3.2
How long do you lose your CDL for three or more serious traffic violations in three years?
The third serious violation inside a three-year window takes the disqualification from 60 days to at least 120.
Manual section 1.3.3
- 2
Driving Safely
Everyone
Use your horn when needed; however, it can startle others and could be dangerous when used unnecessarily.
This chapter has 290 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. You are the first driver to stop at a crash scene on a busy highway. After parking your vehicle safely, what should you do first?
The first duty at a crash scene is preventing a second collision, so the area must be protected with warning devices before anything else is attempted.
Manual section 2.20
Which wheel components does the manual say are dangerous when missing?
Each of these holds the wheel assembly together. Any one of them missing puts the remaining hardware under load it was not designed to carry alone.
Manual section 2.1.3
- 3
Transporting Cargo Safely
Everyone
Gross combination weight means the total weight of a powered unit plus trailer(s) plus the cargo.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. On a flatbed, what additional risk comes with a high center of gravity?
A van's walls contain a shifting load. On an open deck there is nothing to stop it going over the side once it starts moving.
Manual section 3.2.4
What do suspension systems carry from the manufacturer, like tires and coupling devices?
Suspension systems have a manufacturer's weight capacity rating, and it is one of the limits that has to be respected alongside axle and tire ratings.
Manual section 3.2.1
- 4
Transporting Passengers
P endorsement (bus)
Baggage must be secured so the driver can move freely, riders can exit by any window or door, and passengers are protected from falling items.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Which sections of the manual does the knowledge test for the passenger endorsement cover?
The passenger endorsement test draws on Section 2, driving safely, together with Section 4, transporting passengers. A bus with air brakes adds a test on Section 5.
Manual section 4
On buses designed to allow standing, how is the standee line marked?
A two-inch line on the floor, or some other equally clear means, shows riders how far forward they may stand.
Manual section 4.2.3
- 5
Air Brakes
Any vehicle with air brakes
The application pressure gauge shows how much air pressure is being applied to the brakes.
This chapter has 147 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Besides a red warning light, what device do many air-braked vehicles use to alert the driver to low air pressure?
Low air pressure warning systems commonly pair a red light with an audible buzzer so the driver cannot miss the warning.
Manual section 5.1.11
What does the manual identify as the most common problem found in roadside inspections?
Out-of-adjustment brakes top the list, which is why the slack adjuster check is emphasized so heavily. A vehicle with too much brake slack can be very hard to stop.
Manual section 5.3.2
- 6
Combination Vehicles
Class A
Pull-ups let a driver move forward and reposition the vehicle during backing whenever it drifts off course.
This chapter has 118 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. While listening to the trailer brakes during coupling, what should you hear?
Those two sounds prove the service line is doing its job. Silence means air is not reaching the trailer brakes the way it should.
Manual section 6.4.1
Your trailer is hung up on a railroad crossing and will not move. What is the first thing you do?
Nothing on the vehicle is worth being in it when a train arrives. You get clear of the tracks first, then look for the emergency notification information posted at the crossing.
Manual section 6.1.4
- 7
Doubles and Triples
T endorsement
Triples exhibit the greatest rearward amplification among common combinations.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. When hooking air lines between the first trailer and the converter dolly, how do you avoid crossing them?
Service and emergency lines are color coded, commonly blue for service and red for emergency, so matching like to like prevents crossed lines.
Manual section 7.2
What benefit does a driver get from placing the lightest trailer at the rear of a set of doubles?
The rear position sees the most amplified sway, so keeping the lightest load there reduces the force available to tip that trailer.
Manual section 7.1
- 8
Tank Vehicles
N endorsement
Do not over steer, over accelerate, or over brake; if you do, your vehicle may skid.
This chapter has 62 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. You brake to a stop at a red light in a loaded tanker. What can the forward-moving wave of liquid do to your vehicle?
When a tank vehicle stops, the liquid keeps moving and slams toward the front of the tank. That fore-aft surge can shove the whole vehicle ahead, which is why drivers must stop well short of the crosswalk or the vehicle ahead.
Manual section 8.2
Inside cargo tanks, what is the key structural difference between a bulkhead and a baffle?
A bulkhead is a solid divider that splits the tank into separate compartments, while a baffle is a divider with openings so liquid can flow through it.
Manual section 8.2
- 9
Hazardous Materials
H endorsement
The dangerous placard is an option, not a requirement; you can always placard for the materials.
This chapter has 234 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Which division number covers explosives with a mass explosion hazard?
Division 1.1 is the mass explosion hazard, with dynamite as the example. The higher division numbers describe progressively less severe explosive hazards.
Manual section 9.3.1
Hazardous materials rules are built around three broad goals. Which set below matches the intent of those rules?
The regulations exist to keep the product in its container, tell everyone what the hazard is, and make sure the people and equipment moving it are safe.
Manual section 9.1
- 10
School Buses
S endorsement
The overhead inside rearview mirror may provide limited visibility directly in back of the bus if the bus is equipped with a glass-bottomed rear emergency door.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What does a sign mounted below the cross-buck tell you?
Where the road crosses more than one set of tracks, a sign under the cross-buck gives the count, so you know how much rail you must clear.
Manual section 10.4.2
How far can the blind spot behind a school bus extend, depending on the bus's size?
The rear blind spot runs from roughly 50 to 150 feet and can reach 400 feet on a longer, wider bus. Nothing in that space is visible without the side mirrors.
Manual section 10.1.3
- 11
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
Everyone (skills test)
Landing gear must be fully raised and its handle secured before the trailer is moved.
This chapter has 200 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What is the consequence of performing the hydraulic brake check incorrectly on the inspection test?
Like the air brake check, the hydraulic brake check is a make-or-break item. Getting it wrong fails the Vehicle Inspection test outright.
Manual section 11.1.2
What must be true of the light lenses on the front of the vehicle?
A cracked, dirty, missing, or wrong-colored lens keeps the light from doing its job even when the bulb works perfectly.
Manual section 11.5.1
What’s different in Michigan
Most of every state manual is the same federal material. These are the parts that are not.
- Low air warning in the air brakes chapter (written test): before pressure drops below 60 psi.
- A warning signal you can see must come on before the air pressure in the tanks falls below 60 psi.
- Section 1, 'What endorsements do I need?': T, Double or Triple Trailers (triple trailer combinations are not permitted in Michigan).
