Maryland (MD) CDL manual 2026
Reading the manual is not the same as passing the test on it. Practice it instead: every chapter below has real test questions you can answer right here, plus what Maryland does its own way.
Practice the manual, chapter by chapter
State manuals are built on the same national model, chapter for chapter. One thing to know from each chapter, then real questions from it to answer — tap an option to check yourself.

Introduction
Everyone
You will lose your CDL for at least 120 days for three or more serious traffic violations within a three-year period involving a CMV.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What is the penalty for a second alcohol or felony offense of the kind that costs a year for the first?
There is no second chance on this list. A second offense means the CDL is gone for life.
Manual section 1.3.2
What is the minimum disqualification for a first violation of an out-of-service order?
Ignoring an out-of-service order costs at least 90 days on the first occasion, which is longer than two serious traffic violations combined.
Manual section 1.3.4
- 2
Driving Safely
Everyone
Fatigue is physical or mental tiredness that can be caused by physical or mental strain, repetitive tasks, illness or lack of sleep.
This chapter has 290 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. When does the manual tell you to be especially alert for drunk and sleepy drivers?
Late night is when both impairments are most common, so the clues to look for matter most in those hours.
Manual section 2.8.3
Why do experienced drivers avoid backing their commercial vehicle whenever they can?
Because a driver can never see the entire area behind the vehicle, every backing maneuver carries risk, so the safest plan is to avoid backing whenever possible.
Manual section 2.2
- 3
Transporting Cargo Safely
Everyone
Too little weight on the driving axles can cause poor traction; the drive wheels may spin easily and during bad weather the truck may not be able to keep going.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Which term describes the combined weight of a powered vehicle, its trailer, and all of the cargo being carried?
Gross combination weight is the total weight of the tractor or power unit plus its trailer or trailers plus the cargo, measured as the rig actually sits.
Manual section 3.1
What does axle weight measure?
Axle weight is what reaches the road through that axle or axle set, which is what bridge formulas and scales are concerned with.
Manual section 3.2.1
- 4
Transporting Passengers
P endorsement (bus)
Do not tow or push a bus with riders aboard unless getting off would be unsafe, and then only to the nearest safe location to discharge them.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Your coach is low on fuel mid-trip and a truck stop is ahead. What is the general rule about refueling while your passengers remain in their seats?
Fueling a bus with riders aboard should be avoided unless it is truly necessary, because fuel handling creates a fire risk close to the passengers.
Manual section 4.4
While checking the outside of your bus, you find an emergency exit standing open. What should you do?
Open emergency exits get closed during the outside check, along with any open access panels, before the bus moves.
Manual section 4.1.2
- 5
Air Brakes
Any vehicle with air brakes
On large buses it is common for the low pressure warning devices to signal at 80 to 85 psi.
This chapter has 148 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How long a crack in a brake drum or disc is acceptable during inspection?
The limit is set against the friction area itself: nothing longer than half its width. A crack past that point can let the drum come apart under braking heat.
Manual section 5.3.2
What are the two halves of a dual air brake system called?
One half is called primary and the other secondary, and each has its own tanks, lines, and gauge reading.
Manual section 5.2
- 6
Combination Vehicles
Class A
When more cargo is piled up in a truck, the center of gravity moves higher up from the road and the truck becomes easier to turn over.
This chapter has 118 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. Why is a fully loaded tractor-trailer more likely to roll over in a curve than a passenger car?
The higher a vehicle's center of gravity sits, the more easily it tips in a curve, and a loaded combination carries much of its weight well above the roadway.
Manual section 6.1.1
After the fifth wheel jaws lock during coupling, how do you confirm the connection with a tug test?
With the trailer brakes locked, easing the tractor forward in low gear puts a pull on the coupling; if the units stay together, the jaws are holding the kingpin.
Manual section 6.4.1
- 7
Doubles and Triples
T endorsement
Sliding fifth wheel check: slide not damaged or missing parts, properly greased, all locking pins present and locked in place.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. You are finishing the coupling of a set of doubles. What is the correct final position of the rear trailer's landing gear?
Once the coupling is made and tested, the landing gear must come all the way up so it cannot strike the road, a curb, or a railroad crossing.
Manual section 7.2.1
What benefit does a driver get from placing the lightest trailer at the rear of a set of doubles?
The rear position sees the most amplified sway, so keeping the lightest load there reduces the force available to tip that trailer.
Manual section 7.1
- 8
Tank Vehicles
N endorsement
Side-to-side surge in curves adds lateral force that raises rollover risk in tank vehicles.
This chapter has 62 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What does the manual say wet roads do to normal stopping distance?
Wet pavement doubles the distance needed, which is a large allowance to find in traffic when the load behind you is also surging.
Manual section 8.3.4
What does the manual say is required of anyone who drives a liquid tanker?
Surge makes a tanker behave unlike any other load, so the manual puts the requirement on knowing that specific vehicle's handling rather than on general experience.
Manual section 8.2.2
- 9
Hazardous Materials
H endorsement
Bulk packaging is a single container with a capacity greater than 119 gallons.
This chapter has 234 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How do you make hazardous materials shipping papers stand out from the rest?
Someone entering the cab after a crash has to find them immediately, so they are tabbed or placed on top of the other papers.
Manual section 9.6.10
Within what period must carriers make detailed written reports of a hazardous materials incident?
The phone call to the National Response Center is immediate; the carrier's detailed written report follows within 30 days.
Manual section 9.7.5
- 10
School Buses
S endorsement
Drivers of ABS-equipped buses should brake normally with steady pedal pressure and let the system prevent lockup.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.During an emergency on the route, who is primarily responsible for deciding whether students evacuate the bus or stay on board?
The driver is in charge of the bus and its passengers and must weigh the hazards and decide whether staying aboard or evacuating is safer.
Manual section 10.3
How should students board the bus?
Single file at a walking pace with a hand on the rail is what keeps a child from being pushed off the steps or caught in the door.
Manual section 10.2.2
- 11
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
Everyone (skills test)
Reflective tape is only required for trailers; some jurisdictional laws may require reflective tape for school buses.
This chapter has 200 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. At what speed is the service brake check performed?
You pull forward at about 5 mph and apply the foot brake to a complete stop, watching for any pull to one side.
Manual section 11.1.1
With the engine in what state are the critical fluid levels inspected?
The fluids are checked with the engine off, which is also why the caution about the radiator cap applies.
Manual section 11.5.1
What’s different in Maryland
Most of every state manual is the same federal material. These are the parts that are not.
- Skills test: the modernized skills test.
- Triple trailers are not permitted to be driven on Maryland roads.
- Fire apparatus may be operated by the use of an Emergency Vehicle Operator Card (EVOC) and a valid State driver's license.
