Maine (ME) CDL manual 2026
Reading the manual is not the same as passing the test on it. Practice it instead: every chapter below has real test questions you can answer right here, plus what Maine does its own way.
Practice the manual, chapter by chapter
State manuals are built on the same national model, chapter for chapter. One thing to know from each chapter, then real questions from it to answer — tap an option to check yourself.
- 1
Introduction
Everyone
Passenger capacity threshold: 16 or more passengers including the driver.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How long will you lose your CDL for a first alcohol or felony offense committed while operating a placarded hazmat vehicle?
The ordinary first-offense penalty is one year, but committing the offense in a vehicle placarded for hazardous materials raises it to three.
Manual section 1.3.2
How quickly must you tell your employer that your license has been suspended?
A suspension, revocation, cancellation, or disqualification is reported within two business days, far faster than the 30 days allowed for a conviction.
Manual section 1.4
- 2
Driving Safely
Everyone
Start the engine; listen for unusual noises.
This chapter has 290 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What is the minimum tread depth required in every major groove on a front (steering) tire?
Front tires carry the steering load and must have at least 4/32 inch of tread in every major groove. Other tires need at least 2/32 inch.
Manual section 2.2
Why should you never change gears while your vehicle is moving across railroad tracks?
A gear change that fails on the crossing can leave the vehicle without power on the tracks, so drivers should cross in a gear that will carry them completely across without shifting.
Manual section 2.15
- 3
Transporting Cargo Safely
Everyone
Whether or not you load and secure the cargo yourself, you are responsible for inspecting your cargo and recognizing overloads and poorly balanced weight.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.A dispatcher offers you a load that requires hazardous materials placards on the trailer, but you do not have a hazmat endorsement. What may you do?
A vehicle that must display hazardous materials placards may only be driven by someone whose CDL carries the hazardous materials endorsement.
Manual section 3.5
What do suspension systems carry from the manufacturer, like tires and coupling devices?
Suspension systems have a manufacturer's weight capacity rating, and it is one of the limits that has to be respected alongside axle and tire ratings.
Manual section 3.2.1
- 4
Transporting Passengers
P endorsement (bus)
While driving, scan the interior of your bus as well as the road ahead, to the sides and to the rear.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.A standee line is painted on the floor of buses that allow standing riders. What does this line mark?
The standee line is a line on the floor near the driver, and no rider may stand forward of it while the bus is in motion. It keeps standing passengers out of the driver's view and working space.
Manual section 4.3
A rider stacks several suitcases against a window marked as an emergency exit on your intercity bus. Why must you have the bags moved?
Carry-on baggage must be placed so that all emergency exits stay clear and usable; anything blocking an exit defeats its purpose in an evacuation.
Manual section 4.2
- 5
Air Brakes
Any vehicle with air brakes
Water and compressor oil accumulate in air tanks, can freeze in cold weather, and must be drained out.
This chapter has 148 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How is supply pressure displayed on a vehicle with a dual air brake system?
Each half of a dual system has to be readable on its own, so the vehicle carries either two gauges or a single gauge with two needles.
Manual section 5.1.9
How may the parking brakes be operated on an older air-braked vehicle?
Newer vehicles use the yellow diamond-shaped push-pull knob, but on older equipment the same job may be done by a lever.
Manual section 5.1.15
- 6
Combination Vehicles
Class A
Plug the electrical cord into the trailer and fasten the safety catch.
This chapter has 118 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What rearward amplification figure does the manual give for triples?
Triples come in at 3.5, meaning the last trailer can be rolled about three and a half times as easily as a five-axle tractor in the same quick maneuver.
Manual section 6.1.2
What steering habit best protects a doubles driver from tipping the rear trailer through rearward amplification?
Gentle, gradual steering keeps the motion transferred to the trailers small, preventing the amplified swing that can tip the rearmost unit.
Manual section 6.1.2
- 7
Doubles and Triples
T endorsement
If the sliding fifth wheel is air powered, check that there are no air leaks.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How should you adjust your driving when pulling doubles in rain or snow?
Multi-trailer rigs are more vulnerable in bad weather, so slower speeds and added caution are required.
Manual section 7.1
Before backing the converter dolly under the second trailer, the trailer's nose height should be:
The trailer should sit just below the fifth wheel so it is raised slightly as the dolly slides under, ensuring a snug coupling.
Manual section 7.2
- 8
Tank Vehicles
N endorsement
Drivers should slow to a safe speed before a curve and maintain slight power through it rather than braking in the curve.
This chapter has 62 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Compared with most other kinds of cargo, why does a load of liquid in a tank make a truck easier to roll over?
A cargo tank places the load well above the pavement, giving the vehicle a high center of gravity. The higher the weight rides, the less sideways force it takes to tip the vehicle over.
Manual section 8.2
A tanker driver wants to avoid skids, which are especially dangerous when a liquid load is pushing on the tank. What causes most skids?
Most skids happen when a driver is going too fast for conditions and then brakes, steers, or accelerates harder than the available traction allows.
Manual section 8.3
- 9
Hazardous Materials
H endorsement
Division 2.1 is Flammable Gases, with propane as an example.
This chapter has 234 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What does the manual require for materials subject to spontaneous combustion or heating?
Ventilation carries away the heat and vapor these materials generate. Without it the cargo space becomes the very environment that starts the fire.
Manual section 9.4.1
What is required of the surface a placard is mounted on?
A placard that blends into the panel behind it may not register at a distance, so the background has to contrast with it.
Manual section 9.3.10
- 10
School Buses
S endorsement
Alternately flashing amber lights warn traffic that the bus is slowing and about to stop for students.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.A student who just exited your bus drops a book, and it slides underneath the bus. What should the student have been taught to do?
A child reaching or crawling near the bus disappears into the danger zones; students must leave dropped items and alert the driver rather than go after them.
Manual section 10.2
What should be switched on while loading students in the dark?
The dome light lets students see the steps and the aisle, and lets you see them as they come aboard.
Manual section 10.2.2
- 11
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
Everyone (skills test)
Leaks are a fire hazard and can cause driving hazards to other traffic; fuel on pavement can be very slippery.
This chapter has 200 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What color must the reflectors mounted on the rear of a trailer be during your inspection?
Reflectors on the rear of the vehicle must be red; amber reflectors belong on the front and sides toward the front.
Manual section 11.2.7
What must be true of the light lenses on the front of the vehicle?
A cracked, dirty, missing, or wrong-colored lens keeps the light from doing its job even when the bulb works perfectly.
Manual section 11.5.1
What’s different in Maine
Most of every state manual is the same federal material. These are the parts that are not.
- Skills test: the older (2005) skills test.
- Low air warning in the pre-trip inspection (skills test): before pressure drops below 55 psi.
