Indiana (IN) CDL manual 2026
Reading the manual is not the same as passing the test on it. Practice it instead: every chapter below has real test questions you can answer right here, plus what Indiana does its own way.
Practice the manual, chapter by chapter
State manuals are built on the same national model, chapter for chapter. One thing to know from each chapter, then real questions from it to answer — tap an option to check yourself.
- 1
Introduction
Everyone
You cannot have more than one license; if you break this rule, a court may fine you up to $5,000 or put you in jail and keep your home state license and return any others.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Your personal vehicle license is revoked for an alcohol violation. How long do you lose your CDL?
Alcohol, controlled substance, or felony violations in your own car cost you the CDL for a year. A second such violation, in either vehicle, is a lifetime loss.
Manual section 1.3.7
What is the penalty for a second alcohol or felony offense of the kind that costs a year for the first?
There is no second chance on this list. A second offense means the CDL is gone for life.
Manual section 1.3.2
- 2
Driving Safely
Everyone
Before you back into an area, get out and check for overhanging objects such as trees, branches, or electric wires; it is easy to miss seeing them while you are backing.
This chapter has 290 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. You are the first driver to stop at a crash scene on a busy highway. After parking your vehicle safely, what should you do first?
The first duty at a crash scene is preventing a second collision, so the area must be protected with warning devices before anything else is attempted.
Manual section 2.20
How often should you take a break on a long trip?
Periodic breaks roughly every 100 miles or two hours are part of maintaining alertness, alongside keeping cool and avoiding heavy foods.
Manual section 2.11.2
- 3
Transporting Cargo Safely
Everyone
Only drivers holding a hazardous materials endorsement may operate a vehicle that is required to display hazmat placards.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. On a flatbed, what additional risk comes with a high center of gravity?
A van's walls contain a shifting load. On an open deck there is nothing to stop it going over the side once it starts moving.
Manual section 3.2.4
Which cargo responsibility remains yours even when someone else loads the vehicle?
Inspecting the cargo, spotting overloads and bad balance, and knowing it is secured and not blocking your view or your emergency equipment all stay with the driver.
Manual section 3
- 4
Transporting Passengers
P endorsement (bus)
A transit coach brake-door interlock applies the brakes and holds the throttle at idle while the rear door is open, releasing when the door closes.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.A rider stacks several suitcases against a window marked as an emergency exit on your intercity bus. Why must you have the bags moved?
Carry-on baggage must be placed so that all emergency exits stay clear and usable; anything blocking an exit defeats its purpose in an evacuation.
Manual section 4.2
What does the manual say about the seat belt at the driver's position?
The instruction is unqualified: the driver's seat should have a belt and the driver should always wear it.
Manual section 4.1.5
- 5
Air Brakes
Any vehicle with air brakes
The air compressor pumps air into storage tanks and is driven by the engine via gears or a v-belt.
This chapter has 148 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What does the manual identify as the most common problem found in roadside inspections?
Out-of-adjustment brakes top the list, which is why the slack adjuster check is emphasized so heavily. A vehicle with too much brake slack can be very hard to stop.
Manual section 5.3.2
Your air compressor is belt-driven. What should you check about the belt during the pre-trip inspection?
If the compressor is driven by a belt, the driver must confirm the belt is in good condition and correctly tensioned so the compressor keeps charging the tanks.
Manual section 5.3
- 6
Combination Vehicles
Class A
Make sure air lines are safely supported where they will not be crushed or caught while the tractor is backing under the trailer.
This chapter has 118 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. The trailer wheels lock and the trailer begins to swing around. What is this kind of jackknife called?
Locked trailer wheels swinging the trailer around is the trailer jackknife. A tractor jackknife is the different case where the tractor's own drive wheels lose grip.
Manual section 6.1.5
While backing into a dock you lose track of how much room remains behind the trailer. What should you do?
The GOAL rule, Get Out And Look, means physically checking the area whenever you are unsure of clearance while backing.
Manual section 6.1.6
- 7
Doubles and Triples
T endorsement
Charge the air system to normal pressure before checking air flow to the rear trailers.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.A converter dolly has no spring brakes. How do you release its brakes so it can be moved into position?
On a dolly without spring brakes, the brakes are held on by air stored in its tank. Opening the tank petcock bleeds that air off and frees the wheels.
Manual section 7.2.1
How should you adjust your driving when pulling doubles in rain or snow?
Multi-trailer rigs are more vulnerable in bad weather, so slower speeds and added caution are required.
Manual section 7.1
- 8
Tank Vehicles
N endorsement
Controlled braking is applying the brakes as hard as possible without locking the wheels while keeping steering movements very small.
This chapter has 62 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.A driver's CDL shows an X endorsement. What does that code allow the driver to haul?
The X endorsement combines the tank vehicle and hazardous materials endorsements, covering hazmat carried in bulk tanks.
Manual section 8.1
What is the best overall driving style for keeping liquid surge under control in a loaded tank vehicle?
Every abrupt change in speed or direction sets the liquid in motion. Smooth, gradual inputs on the brakes, throttle, and steering keep the wave small and the vehicle stable.
Manual section 8.3
- 9
Hazardous Materials
H endorsement
Each placard must be kept clear of attachments or devices such as ladders, doors, and tarpaulins.
This chapter has 234 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Within what period must carriers make detailed written reports of a hazardous materials incident?
The phone call to the National Response Center is immediate; the carrier's detailed written report follows within 30 days.
Manual section 9.7.5
How do you make hazardous materials shipping papers stand out from the rest?
Someone entering the cab after a crash has to find them immediately, so they are tabbed or placed on top of the other papers.
Manual section 9.6.10
- 10
School Buses
S endorsement
Correctly set flat side mirrors let the driver view the side of the bus, the rear tires where they meet the ground, and the road behind.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How should students board the bus?
Single file at a walking pace with a hand on the rail is what keeps a child from being pushed off the steps or caught in the door.
Manual section 10.2.2
How far upwind should students be led if spilled hazardous materials are a risk?
A hazmat risk calls for at least 300 feet upwind, considerably farther than the 100 feet used for an ordinary roadside evacuation.
Manual section 10.3.2
- 11
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
Everyone (skills test)
When exiting the vehicle, you must set the parking brake(s) and place the vehicle in neutral.
This chapter has 200 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What must be true of the lug nuts on every wheel?
Every nut must be there and tight. Rust trails or shiny threads around a nut are the signs that it has been working loose.
Manual section 11.5.2
What is the stated function of the lug nuts?
That is the whole job, and it is why loose or missing nuts can end with the wheel leaving the vehicle.
Manual section 11.5.2
What’s different in Indiana
Most of every state manual is the same federal material. These are the parts that are not.
- Skills test: the modernized skills test, since August 12, 2024.
- Checklist on the pre-trip: Yes. You may use a blank checklist as a memory aid during the vehicle inspection.
