Hawaii (HI) CDL manual 2026
Reading the manual is not the same as passing the test on it. Practice it instead: every chapter below has real test questions you can answer right here, plus what Hawaii does its own way.
Practice the manual, chapter by chapter
State manuals are built on the same national model, chapter for chapter. One thing to know from each chapter, then real questions from it to answer — tap an option to check yourself.
- 1
Introduction
Everyone
You cannot have more than one license; if you break this rule, a court may fine you up to $5,000 or put you in jail and keep your home state license and return any others.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How long do you lose your CDL for two serious traffic violations in a three-year period?
Two serious violations within three years cost at least 60 days. A third within the same window raises it to 120.
Manual section 1.3.3
Your personal vehicle license is revoked for an alcohol violation. How long do you lose your CDL?
Alcohol, controlled substance, or felony violations in your own car cost you the CDL for a year. A second such violation, in either vehicle, is a lifetime loss.
Manual section 1.3.7
- 2
Driving Safely
Everyone
En-route inspection includes watching gauges, checking mirrors, and using sight, hearing, smell, and feel to detect problems.
This chapter has 290 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. You are the first driver to stop at a crash scene on a busy highway. After parking your vehicle safely, what should you do first?
The first duty at a crash scene is preventing a second collision, so the area must be protected with warning devices before anything else is attempted.
Manual section 2.20
You cannot avoid driving through a stretch of dense fog. Which headlight setting should you use?
Fog reflects light back toward the driver, so low beams provide better visibility than high beams, which bounce off the water droplets and create glare.
Manual section 2.12
- 3
Transporting Cargo Safely
Everyone
Distribute the cargo so it is as low as possible; put the heaviest parts of the cargo under the lightest parts.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What happens when there is too little weight on the driving axles?
The drive wheels need weight on them to grip. Without it they spin, and in bad weather the truck may not be able to keep moving at all.
Manual section 3.2.4
What can happen to brakes that are forced to work too hard by an overload?
Overloading lengthens stopping distance and works the brakes beyond what they were designed for, and brakes worked that hard can fail outright.
Manual section 3.2.2
- 4
Transporting Passengers
P endorsement (bus)
The rules require shippers to mark containers of hazardous material with the material's name, identification number, and hazard label.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.During your pre-trip inspection of a bus interior, which of these items must be in safe working condition before you drive?
Before driving, the interior must be checked so that handholds, railings, floor covering, signaling devices, and emergency exit handles all work safely. These items directly protect riders who are moving about or requesting stops.
Manual section 4.1
A rider stacks several suitcases against a window marked as an emergency exit on your intercity bus. Why must you have the bags moved?
Carry-on baggage must be placed so that all emergency exits stay clear and usable; anything blocking an exit defeats its purpose in an evacuation.
Manual section 4.2
- 5
Air Brakes
Any vehicle with air brakes
Brake drums are located on each end of the vehicle's axles, and the wheels are bolted to the drums with the braking mechanism inside.
This chapter has 148 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. You climb into an air-braked truck and cannot find an application pressure gauge. What does that mean?
The application gauge is useful but optional equipment, so plenty of air-braked vehicles simply do not have one.
Manual section 5.1.10
Where in the air brake system is the safety relief valve installed?
Putting the relief valve in the first tank downstream of the compressor means it sees the highest pressure in the system and can protect everything behind it.
Manual section 5.1.6
- 6
Combination Vehicles
Class A
Trailer jackknifes are usually caused by trailer wheels locking up under hard braking, most often when the trailer is empty or lightly loaded.
This chapter has 118 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What rearward amplification figure does the manual give for triples?
Triples come in at 3.5, meaning the last trailer can be rolled about three and a half times as easily as a five-axle tractor in the same quick maneuver.
Manual section 6.1.2
Your trailer is hung up on a railroad crossing and will not move. What is the first thing you do?
Nothing on the vehicle is worth being in it when a train arrives. You get clear of the tracks first, then look for the emergency notification information posted at the crossing.
Manual section 6.1.4
- 7
Doubles and Triples
T endorsement
Closed shut-off valves between units cut off all brake air to trailers behind them.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What benefit does a driver get from placing the lightest trailer at the rear of a set of doubles?
The rear position sees the most amplified sway, so keeping the lightest load there reduces the force available to tip that trailer.
Manual section 7.1
What must you verify about the light cords when inspecting a set of doubles or triples?
A cord that has worked loose kills the lights on everything behind it, leaving the rear of a very long rig invisible at night.
Manual section 7.3.1
- 8
Tank Vehicles
N endorsement
The amount of liquid to load depends on the product's expansion in transit, its weight, and legal weight limits.
This chapter has 62 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. At a rest stop you notice product dripping from underneath your cargo tank. What should you do?
A leaking tank must not be driven; the vehicle stays put until the leak is properly addressed, because moving it spreads the product and the danger.
Manual section 8.1
Compared with most other kinds of cargo, why does a load of liquid in a tank make a truck easier to roll over?
A cargo tank places the load well above the pavement, giving the vehicle a high center of gravity. The higher the weight rides, the less sideways force it takes to tip the vehicle over.
Manual section 8.2
- 9
Hazardous Materials
H endorsement
The most common cargo tanks are MC306 for liquids and MC331 for gases.
This chapter has 234 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Special cargo heater rules apply when loading which three classes?
Explosives, flammable gas, and flammable liquids are the three the cargo heater rules address, and those rules usually forbid heaters altogether.
Manual section 9.4.1
Hazardous materials rules are built around three broad goals. Which set below matches the intent of those rules?
The regulations exist to keep the product in its container, tell everyone what the hazard is, and make sure the people and equipment moving it are safe.
Manual section 9.1
- 10
School Buses
S endorsement
The driver holds primary responsibility for the evacuation decision unless incapacitated.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. While a school bus is being driven on its route, what is the rule for the emergency exit doors?
Emergency exit doors exist for evacuations only; while the bus is in operation they must be fully closed and secured.
Manual section 10.3
Compared with flat mirrors, what is the main advantage of the convex mirrors mounted on the sides of a school bus?
Convex mirrors provide a wide-angle view of the sides of the bus, letting the driver see more area than flat mirrors can.
Manual section 10.1
- 11
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
Everyone (skills test)
Inspect for cracked, worn or frayed hoses or lines.
This chapter has 200 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How many parts make up the air brake check, and what happens if you get one wrong?
The air brake check has four parts, and failing to explain and demonstrate all four correctly is an automatic failure of the Vehicle Inspection test.
Manual section 11.1.2
With the engine in what state are the critical fluid levels inspected?
The fluids are checked with the engine off, which is also why the caution about the radiator cap applies.
Manual section 11.5.1
What’s different in Hawaii
Most of every state manual is the same federal material. These are the parts that are not.
- Skills test: the older (2005) skills test.
- Checklist on the pre-trip: No. The manual gives no permission to use a checklist.
- Low air warning in the pre-trip inspection (skills test): before pressure drops below 55 psi.
