Connecticut (CT) CDL manual 2026
Reading the manual is not the same as passing the test on it. Practice it instead: every chapter below has real test questions you can answer right here, plus what Connecticut does its own way.
Practice the manual, chapter by chapter
State manuals are built on the same national model, chapter for chapter. One thing to know from each chapter, then real questions from it to answer — tap an option to check yourself.
- 1
Introduction
Everyone
Tank endorsement: individual container capacity more than 119 gallons; aggregate 1,000 gallons or more.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.A passenger endorsement is required to drive a vehicle designed to transport how many people?
The threshold is a vehicle designed to carry 16 or more passengers, and the driver counts toward that total.
Manual section 1.2
What is the disqualification for a first railroad-highway grade crossing violation?
A single crossing violation costs at least 60 days, rising to 120 for a second within three years and a year for a third.
Manual section 1.3.5
- 2
Driving Safely
Everyone
Posted curve and ramp speeds are meant for smaller vehicles; heavy vehicles should reduce speed below the posted advisory before the curve begins.
This chapter has 290 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What should you do about an aggressive driver's gestures?
Along with avoiding eye contact, ignoring gestures and refusing to react removes the response the aggressive driver is looking for.
Manual section 2.10.3
Which wheel components does the manual say are dangerous when missing?
Each of these holds the wheel assembly together. Any one of them missing puts the remaining hardware under load it was not designed to carry alone.
Manual section 2.1.3
- 3
Transporting Cargo Safely
Everyone
Cargo requires at least one tiedown per 10 feet of length, with an absolute minimum of two tiedowns for any load.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What do suspension systems carry from the manufacturer, like tires and coupling devices?
Suspension systems have a manufacturer's weight capacity rating, and it is one of the limits that has to be respected alongside axle and tire ratings.
Manual section 3.2.1
What does Gross Vehicle Weight Rating describe?
GVWR is a rating set by the manufacturer, not a measurement. It states how much the single vehicle is designed to weigh when loaded.
Manual section 3.2.1
- 4
Transporting Passengers
P endorsement (bus)
The rules require shippers to mark containers of hazardous material with the material's name, identification number, and hazard label.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. You are driving a bus toward a railroad crossing where a stop is required. Within what distance range before the nearest rail must you stop?
Buses must stop between 15 and 50 feet before the nearest rail at railroad crossings where a stop is required. From there the driver looks and listens in both directions for a train.
Manual section 4.3
Crash records show that buses are involved in collisions at one location type far more than others. Where should you be especially defensive?
Many bus crashes happen at intersections, so drivers should approach them with caution and never assume other road users will yield, even on a green light.
Manual section 4.3
- 5
Air Brakes
Any vehicle with air brakes
Air brakes are really three different braking systems: service brake, parking brake, and emergency brake.
This chapter has 148 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What are the two halves of a dual air brake system called?
One half is called primary and the other secondary, and each has its own tanks, lines, and gauge reading.
Manual section 5.2
How is a manually operated air tank drain valve worked?
Manual drains are built either as a quarter-turn valve at the bottom of the tank or as a valve operated by a cable the driver can reach.
Manual section 5.1.4
- 6
Combination Vehicles
Class A
The benefit of ABS is preventing wheel lockup so the driver keeps steering control; it does not necessarily shorten stopping distance.
This chapter has 118 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What happens when you push in the trailer air supply knob before starting a trip?
Pushing the knob in charges the trailer's air system through the emergency line, which releases the trailer's emergency brakes so the rig can move.
Manual section 6.2.3
Your combination vehicle is equipped with ABS. How should you apply the brakes in a normal stop?
ABS only takes over when wheels are about to lock, so the driver should brake normally and let the system work in the background.
Manual section 6.3
- 7
Doubles and Triples
T endorsement
Rearward amplification magnifies sway at each successive trailer in a combination.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What benefit does a driver get from placing the lightest trailer at the rear of a set of doubles?
The rear position sees the most amplified sway, so keeping the lightest load there reduces the force available to tip that trailer.
Manual section 7.1
A converter dolly has no spring brakes. How do you release its brakes so it can be moved into position?
On a dolly without spring brakes, the brakes are held on by air stored in its tank. Opening the tank petcock bleeds that air off and frees the wheels.
Manual section 7.2.1
- 8
Tank Vehicles
N endorsement
Pre-trip inspection includes making sure intank, discharge, and cutoff valves are closed and in the proper operating position.
This chapter has 62 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. At a rest stop you notice product dripping from underneath your cargo tank. What should you do?
A leaking tank must not be driven; the vehicle stays put until the leak is properly addressed, because moving it spreads the product and the danger.
Manual section 8.1
What must you verify about the manhole covers themselves during a tank inspection?
A cover only seals if its gasket is present and it closes properly. Either fault turns the cover into a leak path once the load starts moving.
Manual section 8.1.1
- 9
Hazardous Materials
H endorsement
Hazardous materials packages must be braced so they cannot move during transportation.
This chapter has 234 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Special cargo heater rules apply when loading which three classes?
Explosives, flammable gas, and flammable liquids are the three the cargo heater rules address, and those rules usually forbid heaters altogether.
Manual section 9.4.1
On a portable tank holding less than 1,000 gallons, how tall must the shipping name letters be?
Below 1,000 gallons the letters may be one inch tall, half the height required on the larger portable tanks.
Manual section 9.5.1
- 10
School Buses
S endorsement
The overhead inside rearview mirror may provide limited visibility directly in back of the bus if the bus is equipped with a glass-bottomed rear emergency door.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.During an emergency on the route, who is primarily responsible for deciding whether students evacuate the bus or stay on board?
The driver is in charge of the bus and its passengers and must weigh the hazards and decide whether staying aboard or evacuating is safer.
Manual section 10.3
What should be switched on while loading students in the dark?
The dome light lets students see the steps and the aisle, and lets you see them as they come aboard.
Manual section 10.2.2
- 11
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
Everyone (skills test)
Cracks, breaks, or holes in the cargo area can result in possible loss of cargo.
This chapter has 200 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What is the stated function of the lug nuts?
That is the whole job, and it is why loose or missing nuts can end with the wheel leaving the vehicle.
Manual section 11.5.2
What is the consequence of performing the hydraulic brake check incorrectly on the inspection test?
Like the air brake check, the hydraulic brake check is a make-or-break item. Getting it wrong fails the Vehicle Inspection test outright.
Manual section 11.1.2
What’s different in Connecticut
Most of every state manual is the same federal material. These are the parts that are not.
