California (CA) CDL manual 2026
Reading the manual is not the same as passing the test on it. Practice it instead: every chapter below has real test questions you can answer right here, plus what California does its own way.
Practice the manual, chapter by chapter
State manuals are built on the same national model, chapter for chapter. One thing to know from each chapter, then real questions from it to answer — tap an option to check yourself.
- 1
Introduction
Everyone
Passenger capacity threshold: 16 or more passengers including the driver.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How quickly must you tell your employer that your license has been suspended?
A suspension, revocation, cancellation, or disqualification is reported within two business days, far faster than the 30 days allowed for a conviction.
Manual section 1.4
What is the penalty for a second alcohol or felony offense of the kind that costs a year for the first?
There is no second chance on this list. A second offense means the CDL is gone for life.
Manual section 1.3.2
- 2
Driving Safely
Everyone
An injured person should not be moved unless a hazard such as fire or passing traffic makes leaving them in place more dangerous.
This chapter has 290 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. You cannot avoid driving through a stretch of dense fog. Which headlight setting should you use?
Fog reflects light back toward the driver, so low beams provide better visibility than high beams, which bounce off the water droplets and create glare.
Manual section 2.12
What is the final action of the engine compartment step?
An unsecured hood or cab can come open at speed, which is why the step ends by closing and latching whatever was opened.
Manual section 2.1.5
- 3
Transporting Cargo Safely
Everyone
Tire Load is the maximum safe weight a tire can carry at a specified pressure; this rating is stated on the side of each tire.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. When is a high center of gravity most dangerous?
Both situations put sideways force into a load whose weight sits high. That is the combination that tips a vehicle over.
Manual section 3.2.3
Which of these is named as proper tie-down equipment?
Tie-downs must be of the proper type and strength, and they must be attached to the vehicle correctly using hooks, bolts, rails, or rings.
Manual section 3.3.2
- 4
Transporting Passengers
P endorsement (bus)
A bus must have the fire extinguisher and emergency reflectors required by law: three reflective triangles, or at least six fuses, or three liquid burning flares.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What does the manual say about the seat belt at the driver's position?
The instruction is unqualified: the driver's seat should have a belt and the driver should always wear it.
Manual section 4.1.5
During your pre-trip inspection of a bus interior, which of these items must be in safe working condition before you drive?
Before driving, the interior must be checked so that handholds, railings, floor covering, signaling devices, and emergency exit handles all work safely. These items directly protect riders who are moving about or requesting stops.
Manual section 4.1
- 5
Air Brakes
Any vehicle with air brakes
Tanks with automatic drains still include manual drain valves that should be operated to verify moisture removal.
This chapter has 148 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How may the parking brakes be operated on an older air-braked vehicle?
Newer vehicles use the yellow diamond-shaped push-pull knob, but on older equipment the same job may be done by a lever.
Manual section 5.1.15
What does the manual identify as the most common problem found in roadside inspections?
Out-of-adjustment brakes top the list, which is why the slack adjuster check is emphasized so heavily. A vehicle with too much brake slack can be very hard to stop.
Manual section 5.3.2
- 6
Combination Vehicles
Class A
Raise the trailer landing gear slightly off the ground, then pull the tractor gently forward with the trailer brakes locked to check the coupling.
This chapter has 118 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. While backing into a dock you lose track of how much room remains behind the trailer. What should you do?
The GOAL rule, Get Out And Look, means physically checking the area whenever you are unsure of clearance while backing.
Manual section 6.1.6
After the fifth wheel jaws lock during coupling, how do you confirm the connection with a tug test?
With the trailer brakes locked, easing the tractor forward in low gear puts a pull on the coupling; if the units stay together, the jaws are holding the kingpin.
Manual section 6.4.1
- 7
Doubles and Triples
T endorsement
Slowing in advance and steering gently prevents rearward amplification from tipping the last trailer.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. When hooking air lines between the first trailer and the converter dolly, how do you avoid crossing them?
Service and emergency lines are color coded, commonly blue for service and red for emergency, so matching like to like prevents crossed lines.
Manual section 7.2
A converter dolly has no spring brakes. How do you release its brakes so it can be moved into position?
On a dolly without spring brakes, the brakes are held on by air stored in its tank. Opening the tank petcock bleeds that air off and frees the wheels.
Manual section 7.2.1
- 8
Tank Vehicles
N endorsement
Controlled braking is applying the brakes as hard as possible without locking the wheels while keeping steering movements very small.
This chapter has 62 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Compared with most other kinds of cargo, why does a load of liquid in a tank make a truck easier to roll over?
A cargo tank places the load well above the pavement, giving the vehicle a high center of gravity. The higher the weight rides, the less sideways force it takes to tip the vehicle over.
Manual section 8.2
What does the manual say wet roads do to normal stopping distance?
Wet pavement doubles the distance needed, which is a large allowance to find in traffic when the load behind you is also surging.
Manual section 8.3.4
- 9
Hazardous Materials
H endorsement
The regulations require that hazardous materials employees be trained and tested at least once every three years.
This chapter has 234 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What makes a container a cargo tank rather than a portable tank?
Cargo tanks are bulk packaging built onto the vehicle and stay there through loading and unloading. Portable tanks are the ones that come off.
Manual section 9.5
On a portable tank holding less than 1,000 gallons, how tall must the shipping name letters be?
Below 1,000 gallons the letters may be one inch tall, half the height required on the larger portable tanks.
Manual section 9.5.1
- 10
School Buses
S endorsement
The blind spot behind the bus extends 50 to 150 feet and could extend up to 400 feet depending on the length and width of the bus.
This chapter has 95 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Compared with flat mirrors, what is the main advantage of the convex mirrors mounted on the sides of a school bus?
Convex mirrors provide a wide-angle view of the sides of the bus, letting the driver see more area than flat mirrors can.
Manual section 10.1
During an emergency on the route, who is primarily responsible for deciding whether students evacuate the bus or stay on board?
The driver is in charge of the bus and its passengers and must weigh the hazards and decide whether staying aboard or evacuating is safer.
Manual section 10.3
- 11
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
Everyone (skills test)
The operation of all external lights must be inspected from outside the vehicle, including lights activated by an automated light check system.
This chapter has 200 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What do rust streaks or shiny metal trails radiating out from a wheel's lug nuts usually indicate?
Rust trails or shiny streaks spreading from lug nuts are a warning sign that the nuts have loosened and the wheel is moving slightly on its studs.
Manual section 11.2.5
What is the consequence of performing the hydraulic brake check incorrectly on the inspection test?
Like the air brake check, the hydraulic brake check is a make-or-break item. Getting it wrong fails the Vehicle Inspection test outright.
Manual section 11.1.2
What’s different in California
Most of every state manual is the same federal material. These are the parts that are not.
- Skills test: both versions, depending on the test site.
- Checklist on the pre-trip: Yes. You may use a blank checklist as a memory aid during the vehicle inspection.
- Low air warning in the pre-trip inspection (skills test): before pressure drops below 55 psi.
- Static leakage test: engine off, brakes released, timed one minute; pressure must not drop more than 2 psi for single vehicles.
- Static leakage test limits are 2 psi for single vehicles, 3 psi for a combination of two, and 5 psi for a combination of three or more.
