Introduction
Everyone
You will lose your CDL for at least 60 days for your first railroad-highway grade crossing violation.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Your personal vehicle license is revoked for an alcohol violation. How long do you lose your CDL?
Alcohol, controlled substance, or felony violations in your own car cost you the CDL for a year. A second such violation, in either vehicle, is a lifetime loss.
Manual section 1.3.7
What is the penalty for a third railroad crossing violation within three years?
The sequence runs 60 days, then 120 days, then at least one year for the third violation inside a three-year period.
Manual section 1.3.5

Driving Safely
Everyone
Before you back into an area, get out and check for overhanging objects such as trees, branches, or electric wires; it is easy to miss seeing them while you are backing.
This chapter has 290 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What must be confirmed before you open the engine compartment in Step 2?
You are about to work at the front of the vehicle. It has to be held in place before you get there.
Manual section 2.1.5
Why do experienced drivers avoid backing their commercial vehicle whenever they can?
Because a driver can never see the entire area behind the vehicle, every backing maneuver carries risk, so the safest plan is to avoid backing whenever possible.
Manual section 2.2
- 3
Transporting Cargo Safely
Everyone
Proper tie-down equipment must be used, including ropes, straps, chains, and tensioning devices such as winches, ratchets, and clinching components.
This chapter has 26 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What does Gross Vehicle Weight Rating describe?
GVWR is a rating set by the manufacturer, not a measurement. It states how much the single vehicle is designed to weigh when loaded.
Manual section 3.2.1
Which cargo responsibility remains yours even when someone else loads the vehicle?
Inspecting the cargo, spotting overloads and bad balance, and knowing it is secured and not blocking your view or your emergency equipment all stay with the driver.
Manual section 3
- 4
Transporting Passengers
P endorsement (bus)
Posted curve speeds may be safe for cars in good weather but too fast for buses, especially on wet or slick pavement.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Your coach is low on fuel mid-trip and a truck stop is ahead. What is the general rule about refueling while your passengers remain in their seats?
Fueling a bus with riders aboard should be avoided unless it is truly necessary, because fuel handling creates a fire risk close to the passengers.
Manual section 4.4
You have finished loading at a curbside stop and are ready to rejoin traffic in your transit bus. What should you do first?
Before leaving a stop, the driver must check the mirrors to make sure the path is clear of vehicles, bicycles, and people walking near the bus.
Manual section 4.3
- 5
Air Brakes
Any vehicle with air brakes
Release the parking brakes so you can move the slack adjusters.
This chapter has 147 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. How is supply pressure displayed on a vehicle with a dual air brake system?
Each half of a dual system has to be readable on its own, so the vehicle carries either two gauges or a single gauge with two needles.
Manual section 5.1.9
You climb into an air-braked truck and cannot find an application pressure gauge. What does that mean?
The application gauge is useful but optional equipment, so plenty of air-braked vehicles simply do not have one.
Manual section 5.1.10
- 6
Combination Vehicles
Class A
Raise the trailer landing gear slightly off the ground, then pull the tractor gently forward with the trailer brakes locked to check the coupling.
This chapter has 118 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. After the fifth wheel jaws lock during coupling, how do you confirm the connection with a tug test?
With the trailer brakes locked, easing the tractor forward in low gear puts a pull on the coupling; if the units stay together, the jaws are holding the kingpin.
Manual section 6.4.1
While backing into a dock you lose track of how much room remains behind the trailer. What should you do?
The GOAL rule, Get Out And Look, means physically checking the area whenever you are unsure of clearance while backing.
Manual section 6.1.6
- 7
Doubles and Triples
T endorsement
After locking the pintle hook, secure the dolly support in the raised position before pulling the dolly into place.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.A converter dolly has no spring brakes. How do you release its brakes so it can be moved into position?
On a dolly without spring brakes, the brakes are held on by air stored in its tank. Opening the tank petcock bleeds that air off and frees the wheels.
Manual section 7.2.1
Which air lines must continue past the converter dolly to reach the second trailer of a set of doubles?
Every trailer in the combination needs both a service line for normal braking and an emergency line for supply and emergency braking.
Manual section 7.2
- 8
Tank Vehicles
N endorsement
Tank vehicles need increased following distance because surge extends stopping distance.
This chapter has 62 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Inside cargo tanks, what is the key structural difference between a bulkhead and a baffle?
A bulkhead is a solid divider that splits the tank into separate compartments, while a baffle is a divider with openings so liquid can flow through it.
Manual section 8.2
At a rest stop you notice product dripping from underneath your cargo tank. What should you do?
A leaking tank must not be driven; the vehicle stays put until the leak is properly addressed, because moving it spreads the product and the danger.
Manual section 8.1
- 9
Hazardous Materials
H endorsement
Placarded vehicles must avoid heavily populated areas, crowds, tunnels, narrow streets, and alleys when a practical alternative exists.
This chapter has 234 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance. What equipment must a driver hauling chlorine in cargo tanks carry?
Two specific items are required: an approved gas mask in the vehicle, and an emergency kit for controlling leaks in the dome cover plate fittings.
Manual section 9.6.11
Special cargo heater rules apply when loading which three classes?
Explosives, flammable gas, and flammable liquids are the three the cargo heater rules address, and those rules usually forbid heaters altogether.
Manual section 9.4.1
- 10
School Buses
S endorsement
The dome light should be on while loading in the dark.
This chapter has 98 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.A student who just exited your bus drops a book, and it slides underneath the bus. What should the student have been taught to do?
A child reaching or crawling near the bus disappears into the danger zones; students must leave dropped items and alert the driver rather than go after them.
Manual section 10.2
What does a sign mounted below the cross-buck tell you?
Where the road crosses more than one set of tracks, a sign under the cross-buck gives the count, so you know how much rail you must clear.
Manual section 10.4.2
- 11
Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection
Everyone (skills test)
Inspect that there are no bent, broken, or missing studs.
This chapter has 200 more questions. Practice them in the app and see your pass chance.Which kit, besides the first aid kit, must a school bus carry?
The body fluid cleanup kit is inspected alongside the first aid kit, and both are checked for an unbroken seal.
Manual section 11.3
What must be true of the lug nuts on every wheel?
Every nut must be there and tight. Rust trails or shiny threads around a nut are the signs that it has been working loose.
Manual section 11.5.2
What’s different in Arizona
Most of every state manual is the same federal material. These are the parts that are not.
- Low air warning in the air brakes chapter (written test): before pressure drops below 60 psi.
- A warning signal you can see must come on before the air pressure in the tanks falls below 60 psi.
- Both documents may not be from the same source; for example, an individual may not use vehicle registration and vehicle title from the same registration office or a water and gas bill from the same utility.
